“With a little courage one gets the privilege of living life large.”
       ~ Dr. Richard Pietila

Growing up in a very small town in South Dakota (population 390, including the nursing home of 70), I was well taken care of but given no sense of direction. I spent many hours in the school library reading about the world leaders and wondering how they got their chance or “big break”.  I realized early on that to make my escape that I would need a good work ethic and a great education. I chose the University of South Dakota, which at that time was the biggest and toughest university in South Dakota. Talk about lost and scared! No guidance but with a little time and talent figured most of it out. I did miss my opportunity to go to dental school but landed in medical school instead. From there I went on to residency in Lubbock, Texas and then private practice in Odessa, Texas

I managed my private practice in Odessa, Texas for 25 years and grew it to 1.5 million dollars annually.  I am Board Certified in OB/GYN, have delivered over 6,000 babies and performed over 5,000 surgeries.  I currently own and have been a Member of the Governing Board of a private hospital in Odessa for over 20 years.  Other positions I held during my career include Medical Director of Hospital, Chairman of Hospital Credentials Committee, Chief Director of Surgical Services, and Chief of Staff for Odessa Regional Medical Center.  Additionally, I established the use of nurse practitioners in clinical practice.   I am also knowledgeable of billing for private insurance, managed care, Medicare, and Medicaid.

My private practice was extremely successful mainly because of the planning that went into it. It’s not so much the quality of care (which to me is very important) but the perception of care! Many of my colleagues were excellent physicians but their waiting rooms weren’t full. Why? Because they didn’t know how to take their practice to the next level!   At the age of 55, I was able to retire financially strong.  My passion is now to share my knowledge with other medical professionals, and teach them how to work smart, not hard.  That’s why I started Pietila Consulting, to show you how and give you that sense of direction.
